James Bach describes exploratory testing as simultaneous learning, test design and execution, and he and Jonathan Bach built session-based test management to add accountability: a charter (a one- to three-sentence mission), a time box, a reviewable result (a session sheet) and a debrief. Practitioner guides commonly use 45-90 minute sessions and note what was covered, bugs found, questions and follow-up ideas. Exploratory testing differs from ad-hoc clicking because of the charter and the notes. Fowler adds that bugs found this way should become automated regression tests where practical, and that the findings tell you what your pipeline missed.
